Apple Shaped card

Hi Lori here with a tutorial on how to make an apple shaped card. With back to school around the corner I thought I'd make a few for my kids teachers. I used Elisabeth Bell's An Apple for you stamp from Whiff of Joy.

Supplies: Black card stock, 6 inch square piece of red designer paper. Scrap pieces of green and brown designer papers.  A small bow, twine, charm, ribbon, half pearls, stamps and template.

First off I needed an apple template so I went on the internet and googled "Apple Template" and clicked on images.  There are many to choose from. Save the picture to your computer. I then resized and printed mine to be approximately 5 inches wide. Next cut out all the paper shapes. I then held my template on the red designer paper and cut out as above.

Do the same with the leaf and stem using your green and brown scraps.

Next fold your black card stock in half cut around the shape leaving a 1/8 inch space. Notice the straight 1 inch part on the left. That is along the fold and don't cut all the way through.

It should look like this when open.

Now start to embellish. Add the stem and leaf. I also added a punched border and white lacey ribbon.

For the finished card I also added a ribbon and apple charm to the stem. The sentiment and pearls are also from Whiff of Joy.

Shading with Prismacolour Pencils...

 

 Hi Lori here with a few tips on adding some shadows using prisma colour pencils. 

I will be using the new Fireman Henry from Whiff of Joy and the great sketch is the current WOJ challenge head over and check it out! The  Pennant Die is also from Whiff of Joy!

First off I start by stamping my image in Memento black ink onto cardstock. I use X-press it Blending card as it works great with copics and is really easy to blend the prismacolour pencils as well.

 

 I start by colouring my image with copics.  I use Stampin' Up Chalks and Q-tips to rub on the cheeks.

Time to start shading the hose. I am using a Dark Cool Grey Pencil.

 

 I pencil in some colour along the bottom edges of the hose where I would like the shadows to be. This doesn't have to be perfect, we will blend in the next step.

 My favourite blending technique is using blending stumps as shown. I have a little plastic container with a sponge and some baby oil. I dip the tip of the stump on the sponge to pick up some of the baby oil.

 Next working in a circular motion I start at the bottom and blend the colour outwards. 

 Next I want to add some shading to the Fire Hydrant. I am using Tuscan Red. I am only laying the colour down on the one side where I would like the shadow. 

 Next continue blending with the same technique as before. I use a different stump when I switch colours. 

Next I added some shading to Henry's Coat and Hat. I used a Warm Brown Pencil.

 

 Blend it in so it has a smoother finish.

 I always use my pencils for making my ground shadows.  Here using a warm grey I sketch around the base of the stamp.

 Next blend it in for a smooth finish.

 If you would like a shadow around your image lightly go completely around the image using a warm grey pencil.  You can really use any colour, even blue if you would like a sky look. Feel free to play around and add more or less depth as you feel necessary. For this stamp I didn't add any shadows to Henry's fur. If I was to I would use a dark brown colour in the same way as the rest of the shading.  I finished off adding a few highlights with a white gel pen. (see top photo)

These are just some of the ways I like to colour. Always experiment with your supplies, it is so fun!

Father's Day Shirt Card...

 Hi, Lori here with a quick Father's Day Tutorial on how to make a shirt and tie card for Dad. This is a really fast and easy card that the kids can get involved in.

 Supplies: Glue, Piece of card stock 9 x 5 inches. Piece of Designer paper 4.5 x 6 oinches and a coordinating piece of cardstock for the tie. Two brads, some distress ink and a Father's Day Stamp.

Start with your 6 x 4.5 inch piece of Designer paper. I have used these fantastic Whiff of Joy papers.  Cut a 1 inch slit on either side approximately one inch from the top as shown. Draw a tie shape on a piece of matching paper. I just drew mine by hand and used a ruler to make the lines straight.

Next Cut out the tie and sponge all the edges of the shirt and tie using a distress ink. Glue the tie in place and then fold down the two sides as shown to make a collar.

Using your hole punch - punch a hole on both sides of the collar and add decorative brads. This is optional.

 Next Take your 9 x 5 inch piece of card stock and distress the edges. Stamp a Father's Day Sentiment and Stamp on the inside. I have used this adorable Henry Stamp called Precious.

 Apply glue to the front of the cardstock and adhere your shirt to it. NOTE: I added a small piece of paper to cover the brad backs before gluing in place.

 The final card should look like this. The  collar will be above the cardstock edge.

My kids can't wait to give this one to their Dad. I hope you'll get your kids crafting and give it a try!

Napkin Holder

 Hi Lori here with a tutorial on how to make use of some of those Whiff of Joy dies.  It's always nice to find different ways to dress up the dinner table. With paper napkin rings the possibilities are endless and they could be changed all the time.  For starters you will need a decorative border punch, some lace, embellishments, background stamp, dies and some ink for sponging the side.

 Start by cutting a piece of 7.5 inch wide cardstock by 2.5 inches tall. Take your border punch and decorate both long side of the cardstock.

 Next cut a piece of lace 7.5 inches and glue it to the centre of the cardstock.

Take a piece of double stick tape or some firm glue and attached it to one end and form a circle and glue the other end to it.

 For the scallop circle I used Whiff of Joy's Nested Flowers die. I stamped with Vintage Photo ink the Whiff of Joy script stamp from the Essential Backgrounds set. 

 I also cut out two matching butterflies from the Cute Butterfly Trio die set.

 All that is left is to decorate your napkin ring with whichever embellishments your heart desires.

I added a few flowers, brad and Whiff of Joy's Button Twine.

Princess Party Hat...

Hi Lori here with a tutorial on how to make a Princess hat for those special little girls in our lives. They make great birthday party hats too. Okay let's get started. You will need a piece of 12x12 designer paper or cardstock, a pencil, some string, tape, glue, some ribbon and embellishments.

Turn your designer paper over. Tie a piece of string around a pencil and tape the other end to the table. Make sure it is just tight enough to reach to the top corner of your paper.

Holding it tight continue to draw a quarter circle as shown.

Cut along the line. Now take a variety of ribbon and tie them together then tape them inside the top point of the 1/4 circle approx an inch in a half in. Use can also use fabric.

Roll the paper into a cone shape and either tape of staple at the base.

Run a bead of glue along the inner edge and glue the remainder closed.

Using an eyelet tool punch a hole in either side of the cone at the base about 1/2 an inch up. Add an eyelet to both.

You can attach elastic through the two holes. I didn't have any one hand so opted for a ribbon on each side that will tie under the chin.

Cover the base with some decorative ribbon or lace.

Last step is to decorate your princess hat. I used Princess Rosebud from Whiff of Joy, a butterfly, some flowers and gems. We love to hear your comments and don't forget to check out the WOJ Gallery for lots of inspiration from our wonderful Design Team!
