Sketch Challenge #3

Hello ladies,

Punched screen card by Jane Johnson

Good morning! Today I thought I would show you how I do my punched screen cards. It is a deceptively simple technique and makes a gorgeous card.



You will need:



Cardstock 30cm x 15 cm

2 x design paper 14.5cm x 14.5 cm

Extra cardstock for punching - the amount you need will depend how large your design is

various punches of your choice - flowers, leaves, butterflies and swirls work well

Coloured image

Shape cutting system/compass or template and knife/nestabilities

Distress ink and sponge




Step 1.








Score your cardstock in half to make your card base.



Step 2.





Decide which shape you want for your cut out. Circles and ovals work well but you can of course use whatever shape you wish. I drew my circle with a compass and then cut out with a craft knife.





Your card base will then look like this. TIP: you can use the off cut for punching some of the shapes out! You then need to cut the same shape from one of you sheets of paper.



Step 3.





Punch out various flowers, leaves, butterflies and swirls from cardstock. These are the punches that I used. Punch out 4 or 5 of each shape to begin with, you can always punch out more as you start to build up your design!



Step 4.





Once you have punched out your shapes, lay your image behind the aperture and play around with the punched shapes without glueing them until you find a design you are happy with. NOTE: It is important to make sure that you have several "anchor points" where shapes touch the edge of the card and also each shape must touch another shape. It is helpful to take a photo of the design at this point so that you can refer back to it when glueing your shapes together!



Step 5.





Ink the edges of all the punched shapes so that they stand out on the finished card. I have used Walnut stain distress ink.



Step 6.





Adhere the paper with the aperture to the card, making sure both apertures line up nicely. Now you are ready to assemble the "screen". You must use only a tiny amount of glue, as shown, so that it doesn't spoil the card.

Add the glue at all the points of the shape that will touch either the card base or another shape.

Step 7.

Continue adding the shapes, only putting glue where each shape will touch another.

It is best to have a non stick craft sheet underneath the aperture as you work to prevent the punched screen sticking to your mat while the glue dries!

Step 8.

Once all of the pieces are glued down you can then add smaller punched flowers on top of the large ones for extra interest and tiny pearls to the centre of each flower. I have also added pearls to the butterfly bodies.

Step 9.

First Aid Kit by Jorunn

Good morning to you all.
Today is my turn to show a little tutorial, and I have made a First Aid kit.

And Whiff of Joy's Get well images are just perfect for this kit.

I have used two of Norma Fickle's adorable images:

"A Little bit of magic might help" and "Wee with broken leg"

Colored in by Copic Sketch Markers.

You need:

*Card stock 29 cm x 29 cm

*Pattern papers

*Images

* word window punch or something similar

*Circle punch

*Embellishments of your own taste

You also need something for the First Aid kit;

I have used band aid, cleaner pad and cleansing ointment.

Lets get started;

First take your card stock and just fold it in two and glue it together...

This will make the card stock thicker as a base for the kit,
and we also the the structure of the card stock showing both inside and outside.
The card stock are now 29 cm x 14,5 cm.

Score at 13 cm and at 16 cm.
Now the card stock easily fold like a little book..

The next step is decorating;

I have used patterned papers in the size 12,5 x 14 cm, and I have used 3 of the same.
1 in the front and two in the inside.

Decorate the papers in the front and the one inside, make them all finished
and then glue them to the card stock base.

here is my start:

The third inside, and where the first aid equipment goes;

Start with making a pocket for the ban aid and cleaning pad.
I have used my window word punch, but you can use f.ex a knife or spellbinder shapes.
I made a pocket almost all the way across the patterned paper:

To hold the ointment in place I have used some of the scrap from the card stock, to make two loops:

Behind the ointment I have used my circle punch and folded in two, and glued it on the patterned paper. This is so the ointment will not slide out of the loop.

Make sure the half of the circle that is not glued to the paper, will bend backwards,
so the ointment will get out when needed. ;o)

Glue the this patterned paper on the card stock too, but remember;
Do not glue all the way up to the pocket... or there will be no pocket!

And the First Aid Kit is ready.

I have written a little manual on how to clean a wound.
And with "a Wee bit of magic".. you are as good as new... :o)

My children are addicted to band aids, and so are most children at young age...
so I will make this as gift sets to my children's friends and class mates for their birthdays.

Pleated Flowers by Claudia Rosa

  Hello, welcome to the Whiff Of Joy Inspiration blog. My name is Claudia and today i would love to show you a quick and easy embellishment, which you can make from your paper scraps.

You will need:
scoring tool (Scor-pal)
Glue dots and double sided tape
My card sample shows Whiff Of Joys Strawberry girl by Norma Fickel
Strawberry embellishment is also from Whiff of Joy

Papers are from Graphic 45 and Webster pages 

 You want to have two stripes of Design Paper cut to the same with. Remember if you cut your Design Paper to 1” by example your finished flower will be twice the size.

Score both stripes of paper using a scoring tool in equal intervals - all the way to the end. I scored mine so the valleys and the mountains are going to be small, every half inch on the scor-pal.

This is how both look like after i have finished folding them

 add some sticky tape to both ends and adhere the stripes together so the valleys and mountains match up ends taped together

 Place a glue dot in the center

 and simply push with your fingers the paper to the inside, closing the circle

 add a generous amount of sticky tape to the back so it will hold in place and you can use this to add the element to your project or card.

 finish your embellishment with buttons, prima flowers or with a circular sentiment stamped and cut out with punches in the center of your flower.

Dr Oakleys Cold Cure Holder

Good morning all its Jacqui here with my tutorial for this month.  I first made a card like this about 18 months ago when I saw the instructions for a Tea Bag Holder card on Katharinas Blog .  I have adapted it and resized it a little so here are the instructions and measurements I came up with I do hope you have fun with this card.

You will need card for the base  cut to the measurements below:
Base Card – white card  11” x 5.1/2” scored along the middle at 5/2”
Flap Card – white card 9” x 4” scored along the middle at 4.1/2”
Little Flap – white Card  4.1/2” x 2.1/2” scored i/1” along 3 sides


matt and layer your chosen Backing Card and papers onto the front of the large base card and the front and inside of the flap card

Next cut a half circle on the little flap with a 1” punch

Now attach the small flap to the bottom of the Flap card with strong double sided tape to make a pocket for your cold cures to pop into.

Here comes the fun part you can now add your image and decorate as you like

and here is the inside of the flap with the cold cures added.

You will need an image stamped and colored, I used "more matching Clown feeling" Norma Fickel for Whiff of Joy.Cut and paste the image on the little card by entering the name of the person.This will complement your reception table, birthday ...
